A Top Name Quits "Internet Marketing"

One of our rants involved how much garbage there is out there on the internet about "marketing" and "opportunities" and "unlimited income" and on and on. Hundreds of people all hawking the same information about "attraction marketing" and "personal branding" that's been repackaged and rewritten and had fancy graphics added and put into mega-packages that you can purchase, not for $497, not for $297, but for the unbelievably low price of $97.

We follow over 14,000 people on twitter, and probably 95% of the tweets that we see from those people are links to capture pages and adweber sites that only want to get your email address so they can add you to the list of people that are being bombarded by emails to get the latest information on how to become wealthy in as little as 4 hours a week!! Everyone is trying to get everyone else to buy or pass along for "free" the same stuff.

And then we got an email from someone who has been doing Internet Marketing for over 6 years. He's got thousands of people eating out of his hand, lapping up the information he provides. His name is Michelangelo, and perhaps you've heard of him. He has webinars every night, email programs and all sorts of youtube videos. With all apologies to Michelangelo here is some of the content of his email:

"I am officially retired from 'Internet Marketing'. I do not believe in it any more.

All Internet Marketing is is a bunch of gurus and wannabe gurus and Think-they're-gurus who happen to be good copy writers and talkers selling info products to the masses who have been caught up in the hype.
A pool of people who are simply marketing to each other while being manipulated to buy this product and this tape and this silly blogging 2.0 program.

99% of Internet Marketing is SHIT preached by wanna-be gurus full of SHIT to the at times desperate masses who desperately need a change in their financial situation."

WOW! But that pretty much sums up what we've been saying. Don't get caught up in the whole avalanche of marketing schemes that you see on the internet. They're all basically the same, they all have the aim of getting you to buy some "product" that will magically transform your business into a multi-million dollar empire, and all it does it put you into a position where you need to sell the same "product" to other wanna-be millionaires. Or the promise of untold riches with ClickBank and PPC advertising! Only a very, very small percentage of people can make these systems produce.

Michelangelo goes on to say:

"I encourage you to find a solid based MLM ... with a vision and marketing system."

We saw an interesting quote today. "Someone who is new to twitter would think that half of the world was selling marketing information to the other half." And that pretty much sums it up.

We've got over 2600 followers, and we're following a couple thousand ourselves, and we picked those we followed from seemingly neutral tweeters, and we see tons of marketing tweets. And we're a little guilty of that too.

Difference is, most of those tweets are trying to get you to buy systems telling you how to sell the same system. It's an infinite cycle of selling information about selling information about selling....

You get the idea. How about selling a real product? Or products? Digital phone service. Wireless. Local and Long Distance. Satellite TV. Videophones. I've signed up for tweet alerts from TweetLater.com, and I'm tellin' ya, the number of tweets about ACN has gone through the roof. Where I used to see one or two tweets in my digests, I now see about 20 - 30. And I get these digests every 2 hours. So, if you do the math, that's about 250 or so tweets about ACN every day! People excited about the possibilities and excited about running their own business.

Okay, you're trying to build an online business, or use the internet to advertise your business. So you start looking around, and see a ton of articles about social networking - facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, etc. And you read about how building your image, your persona, online is the most important thing you can do to help build your business. Blog after blog, tweet after tweet, all imploring you to expand your presence online and become a recognized authority in something. People will buy from someone they recognize as an authority. Posting after posting offering you all sorts of tips about how to accomplish this.

What is VoIP?

In trying to sell the revolutionary ACN Videophone, I became aware of the fact that a LOT of people don't understand the underlying technology and that is a barrier to complete acceptance of the great advantage to using a digital phone.
Wait a minute, you say! What's a "digital" phone?

See what I mean? So here's a quick explanation. I'll add more meat in future postings.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) means using hardware and software to transmit voice communications (think phone conversation) over the internet. The hardware involved is usually a phone (duh!) and some type of interface to the internet; one that can understand phone conversations and translate them into something that the internet can understand. That translation is carried out by some type of software which translates the input from the microphone in your phone handset (the analog signal - which is a change in the frequency or amplitude of the electrical signal from the microphone) into stream of data that can be transmitted over the internet (the digital - which is a bunch of 1's and 0's which the software was able to produce from the analog input). This stream of data goes out over the internet to its intended destination (either a phone or internet connection at, say, a friend or family member's house), and there it is again acted on by software that produces an audio signal that the speaker in the phone can use to produce an accurate reproduction of your voice.
Whew. Where did I lose you? Suffice to say, that VoIP is being able to connect a telephone to the internet and make a phone call, much as you do over your current phone lines.

Then, if the result is pretty much the same, why would I want VoIP (digital) phone service?

Price! Features! Flexibility! Price!

The greatest advantage to digital phone service is that you can make phone calls much more cheaply. You can call anywhere for pennies. Your traditional phone service is in the business of selling you long distance. With VoIP, there is no "Long Distance" anymore. Since you are using the internet, and the internet is "free", your phone calls can travel coast-to-coast without incurring the line charges that you have with long distance as you know it. Most VoIP services today allow unlimited long distance within the US and Canada. How wonderful.
Then there are the features. The same ones that you expect with any phone service: caller id, call waiting, voice mail, and a few others. Digital phone services also include things like caller logs for the last hundred(s) of calls, email notifications of voice mail, the ability to have more than one number so people without the convenience of digital can still call you locally, call blasting, and many others.

Home Meeting for Exciting Business Opportunity

On January 11th, we had a home meeting to present our very exciting opportunity to family and friends. We were lucky enough to get one of the Senior Vice Presidents of the company to do a simulcast to our home in NE Pennsylvania from a location in New Jersey where he was doing his presentation. We hooked our phone up to the big-screen, and it was just like having Danny Volonino right in our living room.
